The Maccabi ICT system is also a tool for managing the various organizational functions that relate directly or indirectly to patient care.
- Patient Registries – Maccabi has organized its patient data into disease registries. These disease registries enable the organization to determine how well it is taking care of patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer by enabling managers to see patterns of care and outcomes over time for the entire population of patients suffering from the specific disease. It also enables managers to compare the quality and outcome of care in different regions, among different physicians and to identify pitfalls and improve them. The Patient Registries also form the basis for clinical and health services research conducted by Maccabi physician's and professional staff under the rubric of the Maccabi Institute for Health Services Research.
- Physician Profiles – The Maccabi Information System now contains substantial information over time on physician behavior patterns in treating patients. Maccabi makes available to its physicians and physician managers physician profiles which enable the physician to compare himself to his peers in many aspects of clinical work such as prescribing patterns, referral to ancillary services, and patient outcome.
- Chronic Care management – Physicians and associated heath care professionals (such as nurse case managers)receive regular on line reports on the status of the chronically ill patients as well as patient compliance with medical regimes. For example, physicians receive a list of all of their diabetic patients which shows them how many have done Ha1c tests in the past 6 months, how many of them have appropriate Ha1c levels indicating that their diabetes is under control, and how many have had regular eye checkups. This provides the physician and the case manager with tools for managing the care of their patients and improving their health status.
- Health Value Added (HVA) – Using all of the above described tools and features of the ICT system, Maccabi has developed a unique organizational methodology designed to help the organization achieve its strategic objectives by measuring performance in three areas: clinical excellence, perceived quality of care and fiscal management. Measurable objectives are set by management in each of these three areas such as: improving the number of diabetes patients' optimal levels of hemoglobin A1C, improving the percent of women over age 50 that have a mammogram every two years, improving patient satisfaction, and achieving budgetary objectives. The HVA tool is a computerized system which automatically updates itself daily using the Information System and shows the organization – at all levels – how well its performance matches its objectives.
